Cedar Fence Guide

Everything you need to know about cedar fencing — species, sizing, staining, and maintenance.

Why Cedar Is the Top Choice for Fencing

Cedar is the most popular wood species for residential fencing — and for good reason. It's naturally resistant to rot, decay, and insect damage without requiring chemical pressure treatment. The beautiful grain and warm color make cedar fences the preferred choice for homeowners who want both durability and curb appeal. Unlike pressure-treated pine, cedar achieves its longevity through natural oils rather than chemicals, making it a safer choice around gardens, pets, and children.

Incense Cedar vs Japanese Cedar (Sugi)

The Fence N' Post carries two distinct cedar species, both sourced mill-direct for the best pricing and quality control.

Incense Cedar

Best Seller

The workhorse of North Texas fencing. Incense cedar grows primarily in the Pacific Northwest and is prized for its straight grain, natural aromatic oils, and excellent rot resistance. It's the go-to species for privacy fences, and it weathers gracefully to a silver-gray patina if left unstained. Incense cedar is our most popular product for both homeowners and contractors.

Japanese Cedar (Sugi)

Premium

Our premium offering. Sugi cedar features a tighter, more uniform grain than domestic cedar, is exceptionally straight, and has superior natural resistance to decay and insects. It's a true differentiator for high-end residential projects. You won't find Sugi at the big box stores — The Fence Post sources it mill-direct. Available in 1x5x6, 1x6x6, and 1x8x6 sizes, plus pre-stained with Wood Defender Leatherwood.

Pre-Stained Cedar with Wood Defender

We offer both Incense Cedar and Japanese Cedar (Sugi) pickets pre-stained with Wood Defender Leatherwood — a premium semi-transparent oil-based stain that protects against UV, moisture, and mildew. Pre-staining saves significant labor on the job site and ensures even, consistent coverage on all surfaces before installation. Once the fence is up, staining is already done.

Maintenance Tips

Stain or seal within 3-6 months of installation for maximum longevity
Re-stain every 2-3 years depending on sun exposure and weather
Clear debris from the base of the fence to prevent moisture buildup
Trim vegetation away from fence panels to improve airflow
Inspect annually for loose boards, leaning posts, or hardware issues
Consider pre-stained pickets to eliminate the initial staining step entirely

Cost Considerations

Cedar fencing typically costs more upfront than pressure-treated pine but saves money long-term through reduced maintenance and longer lifespan. Japanese Cedar (Sugi) carries a premium over Incense Cedar but offers superior grain density and aesthetics. The Fence Post offers wholesale pricing across three tiers based on volume — contractors who buy regularly get the best rates. Call us for a free material estimate on your project.
