Chain Link Fence Guide

Residential, commercial, and industrial chain link — GAW, PVC-coated, gauges, and accessories explained.

Understanding Chain Link Fencing

Chain link is the most versatile and cost-effective fencing option available. It's used for everything from residential backyards to high-security commercial installations. But not all chain link is created equal — the difference between a fence that lasts 10 years and one that lasts 30+ comes down to the galvanizing process, wire gauge, and quality of fittings.

Residential vs Commercial Chain Link

Residential

Typically 11 or 11.5 gauge wire, 2" mesh opening, heights from 36" to 72". Ideal for backyards, pet containment, and property lines. Lighter framework with 1-3/8" line posts and 2-3/8" terminal posts.

Commercial

9 gauge wire for maximum strength, 2" mesh, heights up to 12ft+. Used for schools, government facilities, industrial yards, and security perimeters. Heavier framework with 2-3/8" line posts and 4" terminal posts. Often topped with barbed wire or razor ribbon.

GAW: The Gold Standard

GAW stands for Galvanized After Weaving — and it's the single most important specification to look for when buying chain link fabric. Here's why:

With GAW, the wire is first drawn and woven into mesh, then the entire roll is hot-dip galvanized. This means every surface is coated — including the twist points, knuckle tips, and cut ends where corrosion would otherwise start first. Pre-galvanized wire (GBW — Galvanized Before Weaving) leaves these critical junction points exposed.

GAW chain link meets ASTM A392 standards with two zinc coating classes:

Class 1 — 1.2 oz zinc per sq ft. Standard residential and light commercial use.
Class 2 — 2.0 oz zinc per sq ft. Heavy-duty commercial and government specifications. Nearly double the corrosion protection.

At The Fence N' Post, we stock GAW chain link because we believe in selling products that last. The upfront cost difference over GBW is minimal — but the lifespan difference is dramatic.

PVC-Coated Chain Link

For applications where aesthetics matter or additional corrosion protection is needed, PVC-coated chain link adds a colored polymer coating over galvanized wire. Available in black, green, brown, and white. The PVC coating provides a softer appearance that blends with landscaping and adds an extra barrier against rust. Popular for residential front yards, parks, tennis courts, and commercial properties where appearance counts.

Gauge & Mesh Terminology

TermWhat It Means
GaugeWire thickness. Lower number = thicker wire. 9 gauge is the strongest (commercial), 11.5 gauge is standard residential.
Mesh SizeDiamond opening size. 2" is standard. 1" mini-mesh is available for small animal containment.
SelvageThe top and bottom edge treatment. "Knuckle" (folded, safer) or "Twist" (pointed, used when adding barbed wire).
Fabric HeightStandard heights: 36", 42", 48", 60", 72", 84", 96", 120", 144".

Wind Screen Accessories

Chain link fence can be enhanced with wind screens and privacy slats. Wind screens reduce wind load on properties, provide privacy, and add branding opportunities for commercial sites. We carry a variety of wind screen materials and privacy slat systems designed specifically for chain link installations.
